Most model projections agree that the ocean will experience stronger stratification and less nutrient supply from deep waters. These changes will likely affect marine phytoplankton communities and will thus impact on the higher trophic levels of the oceanic food web. The potential consequences of future climate change on marine microbial communities can be investigated and predicted only with the help of mathematical models. Here we present the application of a model that describes aggregate properties of marine phytoplankton communities and captures the effects of a changing environment on their composition and adaptive capacity. Specifically, the model describes the phytoplankton community in terms of total biomass, mean cell size, and functional diversity. The model is applied to two contrasting regions of the Atlantic Ocean (tropical and temperate) and is tested under two emission scenarios: SRES A2 or “business as usual” and SRES B1 or “local utopia.” We find that all three macroecological properties will decline during the next century in both regions, although this effect will be more pronounced in the temperate region. Being consistent with previous model predictions, our results show that a simple trait-based modeling framework represents a valuable tool for investigating how phytoplankton communities may reorganize under a changing climate.

Spatial Pattern of Phytoplankton Communities from Iranian Waters of the Gulf of Oman in Pre-Monsoon Period
There is a need to increase our knowledge about phytoplankton diversity and distribution in the Iranian waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Phytoplankton samples along with environmental parameters of the Northeastern waters of the Gulf of Oman (Gordim Bay towards Gwadar Bay) were collected and recorded prior to summer monsoon (Mid of March 2013). Seven inshore and six offshore sta...
متن کاملChecklist of Phytoplankton of the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive checklist on the composition and diversity of phytoplankton in the Sea of Oman and the Persian Gulf from 1979–2019 based on up-to-date, valid and accepted published research records many studies have been conducted on phytoplankton species in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman; however, there is not a comprehensive and complet...
متن کاملA global pattern of thermal adaptation in marine phytoplankton.
Rising ocean temperatures will alter the productivity and composition of marine phytoplankton communities, thereby affecting global biogeochemical cycles. Predicting the effects of future ocean warming on biogeochemical cycles depends critically on understanding how existing global temperature variation affects phytoplankton. Here we show that variation in phytoplankton temperature optima over ...
متن کاملImpact of ocean acidification on the structure of future phytoplankton communities
Phytoplankton form the foundation of the marine food web and regulate key biogeochemical processes. These organisms face multiple environmental changes1, including the decline in ocean pH (ocean acidification) caused by rising atmospheric pCO2 (ref. 2). A meta-analysis of published experimental data assessing growth rates of di erent phytoplankton taxa under both ambient and elevated pCO2 condi...
متن کاملEffects of environmental parameters and nutrients on phytoplankton communities around the shrimp farm complexes in Bushehr Province, in the Persian Gulf
The aim of this work was to be informed and aware of the red tide conditions before the entering of algal blooms in seawater supply canals of the shrimp farm and hatchery complexes in Bushehr Province. Field investigations and monthly samplings have been carried out to determine environmental parameters, nutrients, chlorophyll–a and phytoplankton in the southern part of the input water channels...
